Stormy Lake resident Russ Zick has died

Russ Zick, one of the Kemp family members from Deer Point on East Stormy Lake Road, passed away this week. Russ led an interesting and energetic life. Our condolences to his wife, Cyndi, and the entire family.

His obituary:

Russell Jerome Zick, 72, of Rochelle, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, after living his life to its fullest, even during his six-year battle with cancer. He was at home, surrounded by those he loved.

Russell J. Zick obituary

Russ is survived by his wife Cyndi Zick; children Kristin Zick; Jeff (Traci) Zick and Bethany (Bryan) Wilson; and nine grandchildren: Eli, Fin, Oliver, Hunter, Cooper, Morgan, Calvin, Josie and Max. He also leaves behind three siblings: John (Jackie) Zick, Becky (Butch) Peters and Brenda (Chuck) Kastning. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Helen Zick.

Born August 15, 1953, Rusty grew up on a dairy farm near Poplar Grove, IL. In between chores, he could be found shooting hoops in the barn or playing catch with his siblings, cousins and lifelong friends. He went on to play football and baseball for Elmhurst College, graduating in 1975 to become a high school history teacher and basketball coach.

Russ and Cyndi started off their early days of marriage in Roscoe, IL. Russ went on to teach and coach in Scales Mound, Paxton, Rochelle, Ashton-Franklin Center and Kaneland, IL. As a coach, Russ valued his relationships with his players above all, and he had a habit of loving each of the communities he served.

Russ was so many things: loving husband, dad, brother, Papa, uncle, coach, teacher, pilot, and a friend to so many. Papa was devoted to his grandchildren, and his grandchildren were equally devoted to him. He effortlessly built many friendships throughout his life based on shared love of sports, history, travel, cars, music, family and – most of all – genuine kindness. No reason was too small for Russ and Cyndi to hop in the car at a moment's notice and drive across the country to see a loved one. Through it all, Russ and Cyndi maintained an unwavering partnership and love for one another.

Russ will be remembered as a selfless, steady presence and a man who brought humor, joy and light to the people around him. His zest for life was infectious. His legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the many lives he touched.

The family will be holding a celebration of Russ’s life at a later date. Details will follow. In the meantime, we thank you for all the prayers, thoughts and kind words. We cherish the stories and memories. The best way to honor Russ is to spend time with your loved ones and continue to share his stories.
